■Synopsis
: The Ooku is a special place that serves both as a “garden of women”—where beautiful and talented women from across the land are gathered to bear heirs for the “Emperor” who rules the realm—and as a vital bureaucratic institution. Into this unique space, governed by its own distinct set of rules, step two new maids: Asa (Tomoyo Kurosawa) and Kame (Aoi Yuki). Asa, who possesses both beauty and intelligence and seeks career advancement, and Kame, who seeks a place for herself in the Ooku she has long admired. From their very first day, these polar opposites are forced to participate in a “ritual” to assimilate into the group: offering “something precious to them” to “O-mizu-sama,” the deity worshipped within the Ooku. The events that unfold there serve as the catalyst for a bond to form between the two. The Elder, Utayama (Mami Koyama), prioritizes the prosperity and longevity of the Ooku and keeps the maids in line, yet she hides something behind her expressionless face. Amidst this, “something” gradually begins to envelop them. The women’s passions accumulate night after night; a strange sound, like the clattering of a Chinese umbrella spinning, echoes from nowhere; and the maids begin to lose their sanity as if possessed… Finally, a decisive tragedy strikes. The Medicine Seller (Hiroshi Kamiya) advances to the heart of the Ooku in pursuit of the Mononoke, but the exorcism sword capable of slaying and banishing the Mononoke cannot be unsheathed and its seal broken unless the three forms—"Form," "Truth," and "Reason"—are all present. When the Medicine Seller comes face-to-face with the terrifying yet poignant truth hidden within the Ooku, the ritual of exorcism and salvation begins—.
