: In the smoking area behind the supermarket, Sasaki and Tayama engage in casual conversation. It’s hard
to clearly define their relationship in a single word. This is a mature drama woven by these two.

■Story
: Sasaki is a worn-out middle-aged man racing down the path of corporate slavery. His only secret sources of comfort are the cigarettes he smokes daily and the cheerful service provided by Ms. Yamada, a female clerk at his
regular supermarket.One night, exhausted from work, he heads to the supermarket in search of solace, but Ms
. Yamada isn’t there, and there’s nowhere to smoke these days… Just as Sasaki is feeling dejected, a woman named Tayama—dressed in slightly
eccentric clothes—approaches him and says, “You can smoke here.”

The manga “The Two Who Smoke Behind the Supermarket” began serialization on March 9, 2022, on the Twitter (now X) account of the original author, Jishu. The
first chapter garnered a cumulative total of 280,000 likes, became a major sensation, and is currently serialized in the monthly magazine “Big Gangan” (published by Square Enix).It took first place in the Web Manga category
of the “Next Manga Awards 2022,” and its tankōbon volumes have surpassed 2.5 million copies in cumulative sales.(As of July 2025)
